Haw Creek Elementary is fortunate to have a professionally trained and certified therapy dog. “Chap” is a four-year-old golden lab mix who was born and trained at the nationally renowned Canine Assistants in Alpharetta, GA. This will be his fourth year at Haw Creek Elementary.
He is a working dog and has his own schedule within the school, which varies from day to day. There are times when students stop by Mrs. Bergey’s room to visit with Chap or when the school counselor or other teachers stop by to “borrow” him.
Numerous research studies validate the benefits of an animal’s presence within a school setting, specifically therapy dogs. Therapy dogs can help enhance a child’s psychological developments, increase their social skills, and contribute to their self-esteem. Among other benefits, therapy dogs help to calm fears, relieve anxiety, and teach various skills such as responsibility, compassion, sensitivity and respect for other living things. (Information obtained through the Australian Companion Animal Council)
Chap has had a huge impact on the lives of many current and previous students and staff at Haw Creek. He works with students of all grade and ability levels, students who have had unfortunate circumstances, and staff members who need to have some “Chap time.”
The next time you are in the halls of Haw Creek and see Chap feel free to say hello and give him a quick pet. “The power of unconditional love and acceptance is truly a wondrous thing.” (Jennifer Arnold, Owner and Executive Director, Canine Assistants)
